In 1802, Haydn found that an illness from which he had been suffering for some time had increased greatly in severity, to the point that he became physically unable to compose. From this period also comes his �Emperor's Hymn� (1797), which later became the Austrian national anthem. This Quartet, held to be one of the best integrated of all Haydn's quartets (whatever that means) is also burdened with a number of other nicknames. With the encouragement of a discriminating patron, a small but excellent orchestra and a free hand, Haydn made the most of his opportunity and produced a continuous stream of compositions in every known musical form. After his time at the Paris Opera, he worked as the Head of Music Production for French Radio for 18 years. After Mozart's death, the older composer even seems to have experienced something akin to survivor's guilt; he declined a request to write string quintets and refused permission for his early operas to be performed, on the grounds that Mozart's work in these genres was supreme. He is credited with bridging the gap between Classical and Romantic style music.
